Vertical greening

In Hong Kong, the vertical garden is visible from offices, meeting rooms as well as the main entrance hall.
Vertical Gardens were a highlight at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS), 2009.

Is vertical gardening about gobbling up our greenhouse emissions, keeping our living spaces cooler or about creating our own green sanctuaries in the concrete jungle? No doubt that the plants can also play an important role in reducing our green house emissions and take in pollutants from the air while realizing life-giving oxygen.
Here is a also a real benefit in the thermal properties of soil media and plants; You can keep your home cooler by 'insulating' it with a soil-filled living wall or vertical garden, in fact studies show that an entire city's ambient temperature could be reduced by covering a percentage of its walls and roofs with greenery as the heat-sink of elements such as masonry, roofs and bitumen are essentially reduced and replaced with cooling foliage. Reducing the emissions caused by heating and cooling, as well as the associated costs is pretty appealing to commercial ventures, governments and home-owners alike.

Plants known to help clean indoor air include Peace Lily, Chinese Evergreen, Bamboo Plant, Spider Plant, English Ivy, Ficus and Philodendron .

Vertical gardens.are also known as green walls, living walls, biowalls or ecowalls in HK.

Vertical garden are constructed of modular panels that hold a growing medium and can be categorized according to the type of growth media used: loose media, mat media, and structural media.
Loose medium walls tend to be "soil-on-a-shelf" or "soil-in-a-bag" type systems. Loose medium systems have their soil packed into a shelf or bag and then are installed onto the wall.
Mat type systems tend to be either coir fibre or felt mats.
Mat media are quite thin, even in multiple layers, and as such cannot support vibrant root systems of mature plants for more than three to five years before the roots overtake the mat and water is not able to adequately wick through the mats.
Structural media are growth medium "blocks" that are not loose, nor mats, but incorporate the best features of both into a block that can be manufactured into various sizes, shapes and thicknesses.
These media have the advantage that they do not break down for 10 to 15 years and, can be made to have a higher or lower water holding capacity depending on the plant selection for the wall.
